Remember Him That Way

Luke Combs saves some of his heaviest swings for the quiet ones, and “Remember Him That Way” is a gut-punch dressed as a lullaby. Off his 2024 album Fathers & Sons — a dozen songs about dads and their boys, released the week of Father’s Day — it’s Combs watching his own father, Chester, get older and refusing to see him as anything less than a hero.

The meaning: the picture is plain and devastating — an old man asleep in the La-Z-Boy, a western flickering on the TV, “a little more slow in his go.” But in his son’s eyes he’s still “ten feet tall and bulletproof,” the Superman image that carries the whole song, right down to the “S on his chest” that’s starting to fade. Time, Combs admits, is his kryptonite. The point isn’t the ending; it’s choosing which version of someone you carry forward.

The arrangement stays out of the way — mostly acoustic guitar under that big, weathered baritone — so the story lands without a wasted note. Written by Combs with Jessi Alexander, Erik Dylan and Jonathan Singleton, it’s one of the most quietly powerful things he’s ever cut.
