About

Deftones are the Sacramento, California band who turned alternative metal into something atmospheric and strange. Formed in 1988 around vocalist Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter — with drummer Abe Cunningham, keyboardist/turntablist Frank Delgado, and founding bassist Chi Cheng — they paired crushing heaviness with shoegaze textures and Moreno’s soaring, sensual vocals, a combination no peer has matched.

Lumped in with nu-metal early on, they quickly outgrew the label. The landmark White Pony (2000) and the Grammy-winning single “Elite” cemented them as critical darlings, and a remarkable late-career run — Diamond Eyes (2010), Koi No Yokan (2012), Ohms (2020) and 2025’s Private Music — has made them one of heavy music’s most respected and enduring acts. Bassist Chi Cheng died in 2013 from complications of a 2008 car accident; his memory remains central to the band’s story.
