About

Nine Inch Nails is the industrial-rock institution built by Trent Reznor — for years its sole official member, joined since 2016 by longtime collaborator Atticus Ross. Born in Cleveland in 1988, NIN turned self-loathing, rage and machine noise into meticulously produced records that dragged industrial music into the mainstream.

The 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine and the landmark The Downward Spiral (1994) — home to “Closer” and “Hurt” — made Reznor one of the most important artists of his generation, and albums from The Fragile (1999) through With Teeth, Year Zero, Hesitation Marks and Bad Witch kept the project restlessly evolving. Reznor and Ross have since become Oscar-winning film composers; NIN’s live band has featured players like Danny Lohner and Josh Eustis, who also turn up in Wes Borland’s Black Light Burns.
