Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine are the Los Angeles firebrands — vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk — who fused hip-hop, punk and metal into a battering ram for radical politics. Formed in 1991, they made revolution danceable, with Morello’s turntable-mimicking guitar and de la Rocha’s rapped-and-roared polemics.

Their 1992 self-titled debut, home to the incendiary “Killing in the Name,” became a generational touchstone; Evil Empire (1996) and The Battle of Los Angeles (1999) both topped the Billboard 200 and delivered “Bulls on Parade,” “Guerrilla Radio” and “Sleep Now in the Fire.” After the 2000 covers album Renegades the band splintered, but reunions and their 2023 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame confirmed their enduring influence.
